What is an Otoplasty ?
Otoplasty is performed to prominent, large, or deformed ears to make them look more proportionate and in harmony with the overall face. Surgery can also change the overall shape or position of the ears which may have been present since birth. A child’s ears are nearly fully developed usually by age four, and timing of surgery should be performed before starting school to avoid any teasing or social issues.
Ear surgery may be a good option for a child if they:
- Can cooperate and follow instructions
- Communicate thoughts and feelings
- Are in good health
- Do not have chronic ear infections
- Are at least 5 years of age
- Most importantly understand and even desire surgery on their ears.
For teens and adults, suitable candidates are:
- Do not use tobacco, vaping products, or illicit drugs
- Overall good health
- Nonsmokers.
- Can cooperate and follow instructions
- Communicate thoughts and feelings
- Do not have chronic ear infections
- Most importantly understand and desire surgery on their ears and understand expectations
What is Involved in an Otoplasty?
An incision will be made behind the ear, and the cartilage is removed or reshaped. This adjusts the size and position of the ears to offer natural looking results. By the incision behind the ear, the scar is well hidden
What to Expect with an Otoplasty?
The usual risks with any surgery which include bleeding, infection, scarring. Appropriate preoperative evaluation will take place at your consultation.
At the end of your surgery, bandages or dressings are applied to the affected areas to keep the area clean and padded.
Your exact instructions and recovery timelines may vary, but in general, you can expect to:
- Not use aspirin or related products for at least one week.
- Avoid strenuous exercise and activity for four weeks.
- Keep your head in an upright position (including while sleeping as much as possible) for at least three weeks.
- Refrain from smoking
- Protect your surgical sites from sun exposure for six weeks.
