Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
What is a breast lift?
A breast lift is an effective plastic surgery procedure that addresses sagging breasts by lifting the breasts and enhancing their appearance
The sagging of breasts may result from pregnancy and breastfeeding, loss of weight, or simply with gravity and time. If the nipples point downward, a breast lift is most likely in order. Women who plan on having more children should not have a breast lift. The added weight gain and breastfeeding will negate the results of breast lift surgery and thus should wait until after the last child has completed breast feeding. You may be an ideal candidate for breast lift, but the procedure requires an experienced plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, such as Dr. Baylan. Dr. Baylan specializes in breast augmentation with silicone, saline, or fat. This is in addition to breast lifts, breast reductions, and mommy makeovers. It is critical you have the information needed to make an informed decision about your cosmetic procedure, so schedule your breast lift consultation today.
Breast Lift surgery is ideal for women whose breasts are affected by a pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss. Your breast lift downtime is considerably less and takes about five to seven days to recover than other similar breast surgery procedures. In addition, your pain management is handled with over-the-counter medication as needed. Overall, 93 percent of patients rate their breast lift as a worthwhile procedure.
What is involved in a breast lift?
Custom surgical planning is dictated by the degree of sagging involved and other factors such as breast size and shape. One approach creates two rings around the breast areola in a doughnut fashion. This method is better for women with smaller cup sizes and has less scarring. A second approach is to make an incision around the areola and then downward to the breast fold forming a “lollipop” shape of the scar. Finally, for women with the most significant sagging, an anchor-shaped incision (Wise pattern) provides the best access and establishment of upper pole volume.
Once the incisions are made, breast tissue will then be rearranged and manipulated to achieve the patient’s customized plan. The nipple and areola will be repositioned to a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing position. Excess skin is trimmed to gain a firm appearance and feel. The surgery can take about three to four hours but may take longer if you elect to have other breast surgery procedures simultaneously such as axillary liposuction. Axillary liposuction, performed at the same time, can also help to provide further aesthetic contouring of the breast. In addition, small tubes may be placed at your incision sites to help with the drainage of excess fluid and blood, but this is done in the minority of cases.
What to expect with a breast lift?
Your procedure is performed as an outpatient surgery and you will be able to heal in the comfort of your home. Soreness, swelling, and bruising for the next 24 to 48 hours can be expected. Your new breasts will be placed in special garment bandages for about a week, and then you will need to wear a specialized garment for 6 weeks total. Post surgical scar treatment will also be performed. Patients can usually return to work in 1-2 weeks but must avoid strenuous activity for about a month. It is imperative that you give yourself plenty of time to recover after breast lift surgery.
Once your bandages are removed, you will notice the lift in your breasts and a perkier appearance and in a more youthful position. Your final results will continue to evolve in the next three to six months. The risks involved are the same as any surgery, but the breast lift procedure is generally safe and well tolerated. To maintain your results, it is vital to avoid significant weight gain. With proper care, your results will last up to ten years.
