Breast Augmentation
Conveniently located near Houston, Bellaire, Memorial City & Cypress.
What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is designed to enhance the size and shape of your breasts using breast implants. These implants, made of either saline or silicone, are inserted through small incisions to provide a natural and proportional appearance.
Things to consider during your consultation
Saline or silicone?
You will decide between saline and silicone implants. Saline implants require a smaller incision because they are filled once inside the breast. If they rupture, the body will absorb the saline solution. Silicone implants are thought to feel much closer to natural breast tissue. However, the silicone must be removed from the implant’s pocket.
Incision
Implants can be placed through a variety of incision locations. You will choose between incisions in the armpit (axillary), at the base of the areola complex (peri-areolar), or in the crease on the underside of the breast (inframammary). Dr. Joseph Baylan will discuss the pros and cons of each incision at the time of the consultation.
Above or below the muscle?
Beyond the incision location, you’ll also need to decide if you’d like the implants placed beneath or atop the chest (pectoralis) muscle. Implants placed beneath the muscle have a lower risk of capsular contracture, where scar tissue forms around the implant, leading to a tightening sensation. This location will also lead to fewer issues during mammograms.
The other option is to place the implant under the breast tissue but on top of the chest muscle. It generally makes for an easier recovery after surgery.

What to Expect During the Procedure
During your breast augmentation surgery, small incisions are made, typically in inconspicuous areas, to minimize visible scarring. The chosen saline or silicone implants are placed above or below the chest muscle, depending on your unique anatomy and goals. The procedure is performed under sedation and typically lasts one to two hours. You’ll receive detailed post-operative care instructions to ensure optimal healing and results.
What Happens During Recovery
Patients usually feel sore and tired for a day or two after their procedure. Recovery is different for each individual, but on average, patients return to work in two to four weeks.
During breast augmentation recovery, you may experience some post-operative sensations, such as pain, sensitivity, and swelling, but this will quickly fade over the first couple of weeks after surgery.
What Results Should You Expect?
Breast augmentation enhances the size and shape of a woman’s breasts, contributing to a more balanced and proportional appearance. Dr. Baylan tries to give every patient as much information as possible about the procedure and the available options. Most importantly, he will personalize the plan to your needs and desires while maximizing safety and minimizing risk.
What Is the Cost of Breast Augmentation Surgery?
The cost of breast augmentation in Houston depends on factors such as the type of implant, surgeon’s fees, and facility costs. You will receive a detailed estimate during your consultation at Baylan Plastic Surgery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are breast implants permanent?
Breast implants are not lifetime devices and may require replacement over time. Their longevity varies among individuals.
Will breast augmentation leave noticeable scars?
The procedure typically involves incisions, which can result in scars. However, Dr. Baylan uses various techniques to minimize scarring, and he will discuss scar placement options during your consultation.
Can I breastfeed after my breast surgery?
In most cases, breast enlargement does not interfere with breastfeeding. However, it’s important to inform Dr. Baylan if you plan to have children in the future, as implant placement for breast enlargement can affect milk production.
What complications can you expect from breast augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentation is generally a safe and well-tolerated procedure, but as with any surgery, there are some risks to consider. Potential outcomes include mild swelling and discomfort, changes in nipple sensation, or rare complications like infection or implant issues.
Joseph Baylan, MD, will take steps to minimize these risks and will thoroughly discuss them with you during your consultation at our Houston practice, ensuring you feel well-informed and confident in your decision.
How long does the surgery take, and is it performed under anesthesia?
Breast augmentation surgery typically takes one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Your surgeon will determine the best approach based on your needs and preferences.
Is there an age limit for breast augmentation?
While there isn’t a specific age limit, candidates should be at least 18 for saline implants and 22 for silicone implants. Suitability for breast enhancement surgery is determined on an individual basis.
