Things to consider during your Breast Augmentation consultation
Saline or silicone?
You will decide between saline or silicone implants. Saline implants require a smaller incision because they are filled once inside the breast. In the event of rupture, the saline solution will simply be absorbed by the body. Silicone implants are thought to feel much closer to natural breast tissue. However, if they rupture, the silicone will need to be removed from the pocket where the implant was placed.
Incision
Implants can be placed through a variety of incision locations. You will choose between incisions in the armpit (axillary), at the base of the areola complex (peri-areolar), or in the crease on the underside of the breast (inframammary). Dr. Baylan will discuss the pros and cons of each incision at the time of the consultation.
Above or below the muscle?
Beyond the incision location, you’ll also need to decide if you’d like the implants placed beneath or atop the chest (pectoralis) muscle. Implants placed beneath the muscle have a lower risk of capsular contracture, where scar tissue forms around the implant leading to a tightening sensation. This location will also lead to fewer issues during mammograms. The other option is to place the implant under the breast tissue but on top of the chest muscle. This generally makes for an easier recovery after surgery.
Breast Augmentation Surgery Recovery
Breast augmentation patients usually feel sore and tired for a day or two after their procedure. Recovery is different for each individual but on average patients return to work in 2-4 weeks
During breast augmentation recovery, you may experience some post-operative sensations, such as pain, sensitivity, and swelling, but this will quickly fade over the first couple of weeks after surgery.

What complications can you expect from breast augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentations are generally very safe, but with any surgery, complications can occur. In this case, complications may include infection around the implant, swelling and pain, altered nipple sensation, capsular contracture, and leakage of the implant.
What is the cost of breast augmentation surgery?
Cost of breast augmentation in Houston depends on factors such as the type of implant, surgeon’s fees, and facility costs. During your consultation, you will receive a detailed estimate.
Are breast implants permanent?
Breast implants are not lifetime devices, and they may require replacement over time. The longevity of implants varies among individuals.
Will breast augmentation leave noticeable scars?
Breast augmentation typically involves incisions, which can result in scars. However, surgeons use various techniques to minimize scarring, and they will discuss scar placement options during your consultation.
Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?
In most cases, breast enlargement does not interfere with breastfeeding. However, it’s important to inform your surgeon if you plan to have children in the future, as implant placement for breast enlargement can affect milk production.
What are the potential risks and complications associated with breast augmentation?
Like any surgery, breast enhancement carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, implant rupture, or changes in sensation. Your surgeon will discuss these risks and how to minimize them during your consultation.
How long does the surgery take, and is it performed under anesthesia?
Breast augmentation surgery typically takes 1-2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Your surgeon will determine the best approach based on your specific needs and preferences.
Is there an age limit for breast augmentation?
While there isn’t a specific age limit, candidates should be at least 18 years old for saline implants and 22 years old for silicone implants. Suitability for the breast enhancement surgery is determined on an individual basis.
