Breast Reduction
How is breast reduction surgery performed?
There are different ways to perform breast reduction surgery, based on the type of incisions used. In your consultation, Dr. Baylan will discuss the various options to reduce and contour your breasts to the desired shape and size.
Traditional breast reduction surgery involves the creation of an anchor-shaped incision, which is ideal for patients who have extremely large breasts. This method allows the fattest, tissue, and skin to be removed, but it also causes the most scarring. The nipples and areolas will likely be moved, as well.
A second option is a short-scar technique, known as a vertical incision breast reduction. This method uses incisions around the areola and down to the crease of the breast in the shape of a lollipop. This approach can be utilized for women with moderately large breasts. It creates somewhat less scarring.
For patients with mostly fatty tissue in their breasts, the scarless breast reduction technique may work. This method utilizes liposuction to reduce the size of the breasts and only tiny incisions are needed to gain access.
How will I recover from breast reduction surgery?
Due to the incisions and the trauma to the breast tissue, recovery from reduction surgery is more involved than recovery from augmentation. There will be swelling, soreness, and bruising in the area for several days. Patients are required to wear a surgical support bra for the next few weeks. Physical activity needs to be limited for 4-6 weeks to maximize the aesthetic result.
Most patients return to work in 2-3 weeks.
Results from breast reduction surgery
Breast reduction results are visible immediately but continue to improve with time as swelling subsides and the scarring begins to fade. Also, a post-operative scar regimen will be implemented to maximize scar healing.
The risks involved are the same as with any surgery, but the procedure is generally safe and uncomplicated.
What are the risks involved in breast reduction?
As with any other surgical procedure, there are certain risks involved in breast reduction surgery. Such risks include scarring, breast asymmetry, loss of sensation in the area, and other typical surgical risks, such as bleeding, anesthetic reactions, and infection. However, most breast reduction patients are able to recover from the surgery without any serious complications.
