Blepharoplasty
What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, removes excess fat, skin, and muscle from the lower and upper eyelids, giving them a much younger appearance. The results are long-lasting and the most powerful for facial or eyelid rejuvenation.
You may be a candidate for blepharoplasty if you have:
- Bags under the eyes
- Excess skin of the upper and/or lower eyelid
- Excess fat in the eyelids leading to an appearance of puffiness
- Upper eyelid skin that blocks vision
- Loose or saggy skin which cause skin folds that disturb the natural shape of the eye
What to expect with a blepharoplasty?
The usual risks with any surgery include bleeding, infection, scarring.
Appropriate preoperative evaluation will take place at your consultation.
Your exact instructions and recovery timelines may vary, but in general, you can expect to:
- Not use aspirin or related products for at least one week.
- Avoid strenuous exercise and activity for four weeks.
- Keep your head in an upright position (including while sleeping as much as possible) for at least three weeks.
- Refrain from smoking
- Protect your surgical sites from sun exposure for six weeks
What is involved in a blepharoplasty?
In consultation, your treatment plan will be designed and customized specifically for you.
On the upper eyelid, the incision is made in the natural crease, hiding it almost completely. Skin and fat are removed, and eyelid muscles are tightened, and excess skin is removed.
On the lower eyelid, the incision is made just below the eyelash line, at the corner of the eye, or even on the inside of the lid. Fat is repositioned, muscle tightened, and excess skin trimmed.
Sutures are used for your blepharoplasty and they will be removed after one week.
Postoperatively you will have lubricating ointments on the eyelids. Recovery after blepharoplasty is often quick for most patients. There will be some swelling and slight bruising, but this passes within a few days to weeks after your blepharoplasty.
Most patients take the entire two weeks to heal, but it may take a few months to heal completely.
Blepharoplasty results are permanent and scars are imperceptible. However, natural aging still occurs.
Therefore, skin and self care are ideal to maintain optimal results.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are There Any Risks or Potential Complications Associated with Blepharoplasty?
While blepharoplasty is generally safe, it’s crucial to be aware of potential risks. Surgical risks may include infection, bleeding, or adverse reactions to anesthesia. Our surgeons prioritize patient safety by employing meticulous techniques and adhering to strict safety protocols. During the consultation, we provide detailed information on potential complications to ensure you make an informed decision about your eyelid surgery.
How Long Does It Take to See the Final Results of Blepharoplasty?
The timeline for seeing the final results of blepharoplasty varies. Initial improvements, such as reduced puffiness, may be visible within a few weeks. However, complete healing and the full realization of results typically take 1-3 months. Patience is key during the healing process, and follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress and ensure optimal outcomes.
Can Blepharoplasty Improve Vision Problems Caused by Drooping Eyelids?
Indeed, blepharoplasty can improve vision problems caused by drooping eyelids. Our skilled surgeons assess the functional aspects of your eyelids during the consultation, tailoring the procedure to address both aesthetic and functional concerns. By removing excess skin and repositioning tissues, blepharoplasty can enhance your field of vision, providing functional benefits beyond cosmetic improvements.
What Are the Cosmetic Benefits of Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty offers a range of cosmetic benefits, including the reduction of puffiness, elimination of sagging skin, and the creation of a more youthful and refreshed appearance. The procedure is designed to enhance the natural contours of your eyes, contributing to overall facial harmony. Whether addressing sagging upper eyelids or under-eye bags, blepharoplasty delivers personalized aesthetic improvements.
What Should I Expect in Terms of Scarring and Healing After Blepharoplasty?
Concerns about scarring and the healing process are natural. Our surgeons prioritize minimizing scarring by using meticulous techniques and ensuring proper postoperative care. While some initial swelling and bruising are expected, these effects gradually subside. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your healing progress, and over time, any residual scarring typically fades, leaving you with natural and rejuvenated eyelids.
Is blepharoplasty covered by insurance?
Upper blepharoplasty can in some circumstances be covered by insurance. This will require testing for visual obstruction. This can be better assessed and discussed at your initial consultation.
